Sonnets
What is a sonnet? A sonnet is a piece of verse containing fourteen ten-syllable lines rhymed according to one of several schemes.
I wrote my very first sonnet in 1993 as part of a Literature class assignment. It was titled ‘Lost Love’. I found the initial process very difficult, yet could not give it up owing to the need to submit it in to my tutor. Nevertheless, it remains special.
After that particular assignment, I did not do any serious writing. In fact, what sparked my renewed interest in writing sonnets again was an incident that happened on Boxing Day (ie. 26 Dec ‘96). Gosh, you might think…a three year lapse. Failing to find anyone to share the feelings I had in me then, I incorporated it into a sonnet titled ‘Revelation’. Read about this critically acclaimed sonnet which made it into the finals of the North American Open Poetry Contest 2000. What’s even more encouraging is that it has been selected for publication in June 2000 in ‘Between Darkness and Light’, a collection of selected poems published by The International Library of Poetry based in the United States.
And after ‘Revelation’, there was no stopping. It was like an addiction. I felt a sense of release each time I completed a sonnet. ‘The Funeral’ was another sonnet which made it into the finals of the North American Open Poetry Contest 2000. Similarly, it too has been earmarked for publication in Fall 2000 in ‘Time After Time’, another collection of selected poems published by The International Library of Poetry based in the United States.
Especially during the numerous times when I felt down, writing helped to put me back into a more positive perspective and not take things so seriously. Most sonnets were written based on my personal life, while a minute few have developed after reading a touching novel or article.
My sonnets are classified into three main themes – emotions, inspirational and life; themes that are universal in nature. In each theme, you will be able to find a wide array of sonnets. I have written over 80 sonnets in all and there’s definitely more to come in the near future.
I am delighted to share my sonnet collection with you
