One Large, One Small
It’s been a few months since I last stepped into my private gym. Worry not as I still know where the weights are and I still know where the changing room is. These are the 2 most important pieces of information.
Though not much has changed, there’s a new policy that the gym is going to implement come 14 Nov 08.
I usually ask for ‘2 large’ when I go to the gym. ‘2 large’ refers to 2 large-sized towels. It’s always ‘2 large’ for me as 1 is used for workout purpose while the other 1 is for shower usage. In fact, 2 large’ is the norm for most guys. Ladies will usually ask for ‘1 large, 1 small’.
But come 14 Nov 08, everyone will have to contend with 1 large, 1 small’ . See, the men don’t always get all the privileges! In the fitness company’s efforts to go green and conserve energy by washing fewer large-sized towels, each additional large-sized towel is going to cost us $3/- and a small-sized towel (or what I call a face towel in layman terms) $1/-.
I feel this is a move in the right direction as most of us, me included, tend to spread the large towel over the bench before we lie or sit on it. On one hand, the large towel helps to absorb the sweat. But on the other hand, it acts as a form of cushion. Do we really need an additional layer? I don’t think so.
The purpose of the towel is for us to wipe our perspiration during exercise and not as a decorative trapping. Many have forgotten this.
As a premium private gym charging premium membership fees, I don’t think the management will consider getting all clients to bring their own towels in the near future. If it does, I foresee a mass exodus of clients to other private gyms. Provision of towels is the bare minimum service standard and is a must in the industry. It’s just how to control excess wastage.
I forsee many will be unhappy with the new policy and start complaining. But complain all they want as the move is in support of our ailing planet earth. Three cheers for the green movement – hip hip hurray!!!
