The Wake
The death of the matriarch so suddenly,
plunged the whole house into a deep frenzy.
Prayer rituals are held for three long nights.
Kneeling, bowing, chanting, incense burning.
The last part of duty as family.
Even if friends do come, what can they say?
Only “I am sorry”, “take it easy”.
Can these simple words help to ease the pain
the sense of loss which lingers through the heart?
It’s hard for them to know how one now feels
unless they have also lost one loved one.
Mourning begins. The eyes water with tears.
Even the gods will cry. Inside us all
resides one huge emotional baggage.
